Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving is the first American tradition I celebrated with new friends in a new surrounding 12 years ago when I first came to the USA. Looking back, this season has become a time when I reflect on the blessings of being in a community of friends, some of whom have grown to be like family.

Growing up in a traditionally Chinese-Singaporean culture, community (and food) are important to me. Who doesn’t love good food in the company of friends and family, right? That’s why Thanksgiving has such an appeal for me. A dose of good company adds flavor to the deliciousness of a Thanksgiving meal!

More importantly, the spirit of my Oklahoma friends inspires me. Their homes, dinner tables, and La-Z-Boys are always ready to receive guests like me. All their earthly possessions, big or small, pales in the shadow of a giving and generous heart.

I have been given the opportunity to coordinate the Home Creations “House of Cans” food drive benefiting the food banks in Oklahoma. It is our hope to foster a giving spirit in the communities we build in. While we should always be mindful of social needs surrounding us every day, Thanksgiving is a tap on all our shoulders, reminding us that we are all capable of taking action to fight hunger.

The “house of cans” is due for completion the beginning of December. It is a reminder that while Home Creations is in the business of building homes, it is also a company that strives to build a caring and giving community.

As we continue to receive canned goods from Home Creations’ homeowners at the model homes, it is our hope that spirit of giving will continue all year long.
