Tips to take care of your lawn

We know there is so much to do when you move into your new home. Unpacking, decorating, making your new home yours and so much more. But do not forget about general maintenance, especially your yard. Properly caring for your lawn is a necessary part of having beautiful landscape. Here are some tips from Oklahoma State University Extension on how to maintain a beautiful lawn.

Fertilize

Fertilizing your lawn is a must to maintain a beautiful lawn! Who does not want a dense, healthy and bright green lawn? Fertilization can also help with weed invasion and help your grass tolerate heat, cold, drought and everyday wear. According to Oklahoma State University Extension, turfgrass requires nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). When you shop for fertilizers, you will notice that the level of nitrogen will be higher compared to the other elements because it is required in greater amounts to help with quality, color and density.

Irrigation

According to Oklahoma State University Extension, watering turf tends to be too frequent and too light. This can cause shallow rooting, soil compaction, thatch accumulation and weed growth. Water should be applied in one application to wet the soil to a 6-inch depth. This will help your grass establish deep roots. If water begins to form puddles, stop irrigating and allow the water to soak into the soil. The best time to water your lawn is in the early morning.

Mowing

Cut grass at a lower level in the summer months to promote lateral spread and to create a tight turf. However, cutting grass too low can cause turf to thin, eliminating tolerate to environmental stresses. During fall months, keep your grass longer than you would during the summer so that the grass will provide insulation for the soil.

Weed Control / Herbicides

No one likes weeds in their yard. The appearance of weeds can be caused by environmental conditions, pests and improper maintenance. Annual weeds complete their life cycle in one growing season and come back each year from seed. The best defense against weeds are herbicides.
